Ordering wallpaper samples of your favourite designs is the best way to decide which wallpaper will make the best feature wall in your home.

Here are our tips for getting the most our of your wallpaper samples:

1. Order samples of your favourite designs

It’s an investment well worth making to help you see if the colour matches your decor and if the pattern is the size that you’d like. When it arrives, check it against your flooring, paint choices, furniture, cabinetry and any other decor item that might impact your choice.

2. Put the sample on your wall

Use sticky tape, Blu-tack or a pin to put the sample on the wall you’d like to wallpaper. Put it in a prominent position so you can look at it over a few days. If you have a few samples, space them out. You’ll get a feel for what attracts you the most. If you’re still undecided, shuffle the order around and see if that makes a difference.

3. View the sample at different times of the day

How does the different light affect the sample? Does morning or afternoon light affect it? What about your overhead lights in the evening? Look at your wallpaper sample(s) from different room angles.

4. Ask for advice

When the colour matching and room matching has taken place, and if you’re still in love with the design, ask trusted friends or family for their opinion but only if you think they can give you constructive feedback. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference – your personal preference.

5. Take the sample out for a shop

If you’re designing your room around the wallpaper rather than retro-fitting it, take it with you to paint stores, flooring specialists, tile stores, etc. so you can colour match to your wallpaper.

6. Trust your instincts

To create a space you’ll truly love, you have to trust your instincts and go with the design that calls to you the loudest. Live with the decision for as long as you need. Buying wallpaper is usually a lengthy process as you have to be sure.

Wallpaper is something you’ll live with for quite a few years, so it makes sense to take your time.
