At-home weddings are increasingly popular, and frugality is not the only reason for this. Many couples choose to get married in their own home because of the intimacy of the moment and the symbolic gesture. You are opening your home to the people you want to share your special day with, and that is no small thing. Or may want to get married at a traditional venue – there is no right or wrong place to get married.
Aside from the special ambience of home weddings, choosing your home as the venue fits very well with many people who’re making an effort to live and consume more mindfully. They’re beautiful, emotional and to top it all off, practical as well.
In this guest post from Nina Simons shares some at-home wedding ideas to inspire you if you’re thinking about having one yourself.
Garden Wedding
If you have a backyard and live in an area where the weather is kind, you have to make use of it! Don’t fret if the space you have is not quite set for any kind of entertaining, because with some proper planning and preparation, it can become a dreamlike garden space in just a couple of months’ time, or even less. Think lush greenery and pops of colour with blooms and you’ll have the perfect setting for your seating arrangement. You can get help with planting or if it’s too late, you can bring vegetation in large decorative pots. If you don’t have enough space to put tables in your backyard, you can still make use of it as the space for cocktails and mingling, with dining set indoors; providing space for guests to circulate will make it all the more dynamic. You’re likely going for sunny weather in this case, so make sure to provide shade – curtains, pergolas or beautiful shade sails will do the job and serve as decorative elements on their own.
Deciding on wedding decor
The best advice you can take if you want a simple, harmonious wedding at home: don’t complicate it, make use of what you have and build on it to create a unique ambience. Your home is a reflection of you, and the more you allow it to present itself as part of the wedding, the more intimate the atmosphere will be. This approach proves much more effective toward achieving that personal feel than putting in extensive effort (and money) to get rid of the features you have. You’ll be surprised by how well your existing interior can contribute to some of the trendiest wedding themes.
Let’s say you’re eyeing a vintage theme for your event. If you have at least some bare brick walls or plank flooring, consider it an interior gravitating towards an industrial style. With that, you can create an ‘urban vintage’ theme – use wood and metal for decorations, tables and chairs an add lots of greenery. Use olive, tan and lilac for decorations and linen and you will have a lovely interior that looks festive yet complementary to your home.
Focus spot
No matter which theme you choose, if you have one point of focus, one spot that stands out, your guests will love the idea and flock towards it to take pictures. A feature wall inside your home could be a great photo setting, but if you don’t have one or it’s not in the right place, you can always get a backdrop for photos. Guests love taking photos at weddings if they’re in a fun, relaxed atmosphere, and you will all appreciate the memories later – it’s your job to provide them with the right space and backdrop.
Timeless feel
Couples are usually torn between making their venue very personal or going for the classic wedding look – but it shouldn’t be a matter of either/or, because you can make a perfect combination. If you want your venue to have a timeless feel but don’t want the whole package of a traditional wedding, the solution is in your colour palette and decorating approach. Use a range of neutral hues in your interior for a soft and dreamy feel. Choosing colours such as ivory, champagne, coral and blush pink for fabrics and decorations will make a great modification of the traditional colour palette; add a personal statement with muted blue and green accents. Your wedding doesn’t have to follow a specific theme at all, but it’s being mindful with the colour palette that will help you achieve the atmosphere you’re going after.
A huge weight is taken off your shoulders when you have a venue and you’re not even paying a cent for it. It’s a great start, but there is still a lot of preparation and plans to be made for at-home weddings, sometimes even more so because you’ll be taking care of logistics that a venue holder would otherwise provide for you. Refer to a checklist to stay on top of everything and get as much help from friends and relatives as you can. There are choices to be made, but don’t make it a stressful deal – this is your day, and your home, and the choices you make should be led by your instincts.
